Sports industry goes OTT

While top-tier sports have enjoyed a long and often lucrative symbiotic relationship with television, the wider sporting sector is increasingly keen to understand the new opportunities arising from the growing enthusiasm for online content. Broadcasters are also acutely conscious of the importance of adding streaming options to complement their traditional linear broadcast offerings.

At the end of November, I joined the delegates at the SportsPro OTT Summit in Madrid – the first since before the pandemic- to find out more about how sports business professionals are currently thinking about streaming.

The OTT Summit was a shortish walk from Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Currently undergoing a major renovation – including the addition of a retractable roof – the total investment in this sport business project is now expected to exceed €1 billion.

UK5G Innovation Briefing

In early 2021, I was commissioned by UK5G Innovation Briefing to consider how 5G might impact the future of television. In preparing the article I had the pleasure of speaking with a diverse cross-section of organisations from across the culture, media and entertainment sectors whose projects had just been been granted UK government funding as part of the DCMS 5G Create programme.

The finished article shares a couple of pages with a piece from Ben Wood of CCS Insight which illustrates some of the technical, economic, commercial and rights complexities that will shape how mobile broadband and broadcast might converge over the years ahead.

Transforming sport online|SportsPro Live 2019

The programme of panel sessions I produce at the annual IBC broadcast technology show in Amsterdam explores how different aspects of the impact that online media consumption is having on the traditional broadcast sector. Sport has long been one of the most important catalysts for new broadcast technologies and techniques. Sport is also inspiring innovation in online streaming and video-on-demand – and propositions are being put forward to democratise access that global audiences have for those sports that rarely enjoy exposure on live TV.

SportsPro Live 2019, which took place in May at the O2 in London, clearly illustrated that sports clubs, federations and events now see online as a critical part of their strategies: keeping fans engaged is becoming as important, if not quite so lucrative, as live TV coverage on match-days. The insatiable demand for video clips plays to their advantage.

Andreas Gall, Red Bull Media House

Red Bull has very successfully built its brand by producing compelling video of extreme sports. A highlight of SportsPro Live 2019 was a keynote from Andreas Gall who, as Chief Innovation Officer for Red Bull Media House, spends his time looking at how new cameras, microphones and sensor technologies can be used to “give wings” to the brand’s story telling.

Its also fascinating how esport is now seen by both the sports industry and broadcasters as a rival for eyeballs. SportsPro live 2019 dedicated an entire stream to esport. From Formula One to the NHL and soccer, professional sport organisations are looking for ways to embrace esport as part of their wider strategies to draw in new and younger audiences, while broadcasters are beginning to cover the large live tournaments which are increasingly filling ever larger arenas.

Bach: IOC excited by 5G and taking OBS into the cloud

The combination of 5G and cloud technology will transform the Olympic Games and benefit fans, spectators, venues, organisers and athletes according to IOC President, Thomas Bach.

The ninth president was the first representative of the International Olympic Committee to speak at the Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest annual gathering of the mobile industry. The event attracted 109,000 visitors to Barcelona in the last week of February 2019.

IBC 2018: where broadcast and broadband converge

IBC 2017, AmsterdamThe growth in the consumption of TV programming and video content on internet-connected smartphones and tablets shows no sign of slowing down – even if total video consumption is still dominated by the traditional linear broadcasters.

This trend will once again be a major focus at IBC, the influential media, entertainment and technology conference and exhibition in Amsterdam in September.  Once again, I’ll be running the Content Everywhere Hub at the show.  Located at the heart of Hall 14, the Hub theatre is surrounded by 160+ exhibitors involved in all aspects of managing and delivering content using IP-connected systems and devices. Hall 14 is where broadcast and broadband converge.

Panel session on the Content Everywhere Hub, IBC 2017This year’s free-admission Hub programme includes 10 panel sessions and a further 34 product or service demonstrations.

Panel themes will cover business and operational best practice as well as helping visitors expand their understanding of new and emerging technologies such as 5G, edge computing, blockchain, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

For existing over-the-top service providers, panellists will share their experience of managing growth.  Another panel will look at tackling the delay between broadcast and OTT delivery – addressing an issue that was highlighted during this summer’s World Cup.  We’ll also be looking at how the move to IP has inspired innovation in new approaches to content creation.  The latest approaches to “monetisation” and actually making money will also be discussed.  Three panels on Monday have been curated to help telcos and other potential new entrants into the direct-to-consumer video services market understand some of their options.

SportsPro Live 2018: Where sport and technology converged

Over a number of years, I’ve produced a programme of panel sessions on the distribution and consumption of video content online at the IBC broadcast technology show in Amsterdam.  As such an important driver of innovation in the broadcast sector, sport is often cited as a use-case for OTT technologies and services.  Positioning itself at the intersection of sport business and technology, SportsPro Live 2018, held at ExCel in London on 11-12 April, provided a great opportunity to explore the hot topics of OTT and immersive technologies from the perspective of the sports industry and sports rights holders.

The 500+ delegates included representatives of international federations, national governing bodies, leagues, sports marketing agencies, media companies, broadcasters, and a spectrum of technology companies involved in enhancing the presentation of sport within venues or to the growing audience of fans online. A broad cross section of clubs was also represented on the delegate list – from some of the biggest names in European football such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, AS Roma, Juventus, PSG and the City Football Group, to ambitious clubs from the lower tiers English football such as Salford City and Leatherhead. Broadcasters present included Discovery, Sky, BT Sport, BBC, BeIN Sports and Eleven Sports.

In a day-1 session on reinventing the sports experience through immersive media, Jonathan Levene, Managing Director at Intel Sports provided an overview of the company’s True View technology that constructs volumetric images and is capable of performing as a “virtual camera” to recreate the view point of an individual player on the pitch. The data handling requirements of the technology are vast: the 38-camera set-up that is being deployed in the stadia of six leading clubs from Spain’s La Liga, generate the equivalent of a million HD movies for each 90-minute match.

Ongoing development aims to convert volumetric imagery into a “True VR” experience. On the basis of the 150 million global audience for live broadcasts of La Liga matches, Levene speculated that if just 1-2 per cent of viewers were to opt for the VR experience, revenues of $50 million per match were conceivable.

La Liga introduced a new formula for the distribution of TV revenues from the 2015/16 season, in part, to reduce a very large disparity between the receipts enjoyed by the different clubs. With only six stadia being equipped for “True VR” it will be interesting to see whether the proposed business model will allow visiting teams to share in the revenues or whether there a risk that the historical disparities are reintroduced.

Another panel discussed how traditional sports rights holders can engage with eSports.  Noting that eSports competitions are currently built on game publishers’ intellectual property, one questioner asked whether sports rights holders were likely to create their own bespoke games in the future. Neville Upton of GFinity, a gaming platform, cautioned that game creation required a very different skill-set and it was probably better to partner with an established publisher.

Twitch’s Chris Mead noted that most successful eSports titles have grown out of the communities that naturally congregate around the more popular published games.  Róisín O’Shea, of Fnatic, that manages teams of professional gamers competing in major eSport competitions, revealed that it is also possible for brands to enter eSports by partnering with to gamers on simpler campaign-based games.

In an era of increasingly fragmented audiences, harnessing OTT to more deeply engage with existing fans or reach new viewers was the subject of another panel.

Representing the rights owner, John Learning is Managing Director of WTA Media, a joint venture between the World Tennis Association Tour and Perform Group. He explained that in 2016, WTA was only producing about 30 per cent of its available content, broadcasting just 700 matches. The JV committed to producing every one of its 2500 matches but realised that its broadcast partners had finite capacity in their linear schedules. By creating their own OTT platform, WTA Media set the goal of putting as much content out as possible so that fans could produce their own programming.

On the future interaction between traditional linear broadcast and OTT, Learning said that from his tennis perspective, his goal in the next five years was to be obsolete as a “world feed broadcaster”: he doesn’t want to dictate what is being fed to fans or partners. Priority is to make sure they can deliver all the “product” at once to all partners so that they can make the decisions on what’s important to them.

Later, Drew Barrand, Marketing Director of EFL, talked about how its iFollow online platform is making the 1500 English Football League matches that are not televised live each year available to expat fans in 225 markets and territories worldwide. Fans subscribe through their favourite club’s website for the service which is delivered by a platform developed and managed by NeuLion: a fan for every participating club has been found in every country.  The EFL’s latest domestic rights deal includes provision for fans in England to access their club’s matches if they are not being covered by Sky.

Day 2 started with the Winter Olympics.  Pyongchang 2018 was Eurosport’s first Olympics as rights holding broadcaster in 48 European markets and territories.  Jean-Briac Perrette, President & CEO of Discovery Networks International reminded the audience that Eurosport’s objectives had been to engage more people on more screens; to deliver the first digital Olympics across Europe; and to add “the Discovery difference” through its story-telling capability.

Observing that today’s television metrics are still in the “horse and buggy era” Perrette explained how Eurosport had come up with a new metric of “Total Video” to measure the total number of users across all devices whether watching a broadcast feed, pay-TV, the Eurosport player online or a mobile app.

The 352 million unique viewers who watched any of the winter games at any time, on any screen, represented almost two-thirds of Eurosport’s European population footprint.  In Norway and Sweden, where Eurosport was also the primary broadcaster, 90 per cent of the available audiences were engaged.

To maximise its reach, Eurosport’s objective was to re-aggregate audiences across all available distribution platforms. “We heard a lot about linear broadcast vs OTT but for us it’s not binary,” said Perrette.

On consumption in UK, Germany and other markets where Eurosport partnered with free-to-air public broadcasters, Perrette acknowledged that the incumbents have strong track records for covering the games combined with significant audience shares within their markets. “It’s not a zero sum game,” he said.  “For us it’s about the eco-system. It’s not about trying to “out-BBC the BBC.”

Representatives of Sky, Bundesliga International, DAZN and Eleven Sports debated whether a genuine tipping point had been reached in the face-off between streaming and TV.

Mark Watson, Executive Chairman and Group CEO of Eleven Sports observed that streaming had reached a tipping point technically where the broadband infrastructure was robust enough and offered sufficient reach, but for big properties in particular, “­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­the economics of just selling content on a streaming basis are quite challenging­­­­.” He continued that while Eleven does stream everything it does, well over 90 per cent of its viewing tends to be through cable or satellite platforms. For smaller properties, such as Eleven’s domestic rights to the third division of Italian soccer, Watson thought described streaming as “perfect”.

Mai Fyfield, Chief Strategy and Commercial Officer of Sky felt the tipping point was still sufficiently far away that she couldn’t see it. “A lot of people are good at streaming on demand content, but streaming live content is much more critical.”  One of the biggest challenges is coping all the people who come to the service at a particular time.

From the rights holder’s perspective, Robert Klein, Chief Executive of Bundesliga International, stressed the importance of quality when selling premium rights and felt that a million concurrent streaming viewers was probably the current absolute maximum. He was also cautious about the current revenue opportunity but did note that there is a desire for accessibility.

Watson also shared his perspective on the much-trailed entry of Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google – the so-called FAANGs – into the streaming market for sports rights.

“FAANGs now all have former TV execs and know sports are an effective way of selling advertising. But advertiser-funded TV networks were priced out of the UK market a long time ago. I don’t see why it would be any different for Facebook.”

It appeared to be too early for any of the speakers to comment on the potential impact of tighter data protection regulation on the online players’ business models, especially in Europe. SportsPro Live 2018 coincided with Mark Zuckerberg’s two days of testimony before the US Congress.

Discussing the right models for the OTT era, Tracey Keenan, WWE vice-president and general manager, detailed why the company takes a broad approach to its media reach.  “Our OTT numbers have hit record heights after WrestleMania, but our TV platforms remain fundamental to what we do. It can’t be a case of one size fits all – you have to be everywhere.”

In the same session Andy Wasef, EVP business strategy and development at Deltatre, added: “When it comes to OTT platforms it’s important to temper and manage expectations. Just because you have one million broadcast viewers, it doesn’t mean you’re going to have one million subscribers to a digital product.

With hindsight, it was possibly a comment from one of the opening sessions that summed up the speed of the convergence of sport and technology as explored in the SportsPro Live agenda. 1998 ice hockey Olympic gold medallist Angela Ruggiero, now CEO and Co-Founder, Sports Innovation Lab, said “If you’re not overwhelmed, you’re not paying attention.”

MWC18: Video and the future of mobile

Mobile World Congress has descended on Barcelona for what is expected to be another record-breaking year.  Although the show only officially opened on Monday morning, several major exhibitors get their retaliation in early by hosting massive press announcements on Sunday.

Samsung used Sunday to announce the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, the latest iteration of its flagship smartphone.  With a strapline of “The Camera. Reimagined” the smartphone’s capabilities as a communications device appear to be of secondary importance.

Monday saw the launch of the Xperia XZ2 by Sony. Again, the launch announcement focused on the camera with the claim that it’s the first smartphone to shoot in 4K video in HDR. Both the Galaxy S9 and Xperia XZ2 also offer video capture at 960 frames per second to give users the ability record clips for play back in super slow-motion.

One of Monday’s conference sessions, “Value Creation & Investment in Content”, explored the challenges and opportunities for telcos to become content players. Mark Britt, CEO and Co-founder of iFlix, the OTT content provider carving out a very successful business in Asia, and Jean Coffey, Senior Director Business Development at Jukin Media which helps user generated content creators to maximise their audiences and revenue potential, both talked about how UGC content is becoming increasingly professionalised.  The advanced camera capabilities of the new devices from Samsung, Sony and many other smartphone suppliers tie into this trend and will appeal to vlogging social media influencers.

In the opening keynote session, Kazuhiro Yoshizawa, CEO of NTT DOCOMO talked about how the Japanese operator is already working with diverse partners to ensure that new 5G services are available in time for the launch of its 5G network.  His prediction is that uplink video will account for a much more significant proportion of traffic on 5G networks than has been the case on 4G and 3G networks.

So video appears to be central to the future of mobile.

The Ryder Cup: a time to look back at looking forward to the future of mobile

Back in 2001, I was asked to write an article offering a vision of what mobile might look like a few years hence.

As the article was due to be published shortly before the 2001 Ryder Cup at the Belfry, I tried to look forward four years to the next occasion when Europe would host the tournament.

At the time of writing in the Summer of 2001, Europe’s 3G auctions were drawing to a close but 3G wouldn’t be available commercially for another three years or so. Steve Jobs probably hadn’t even started thinking about the iPhone or apps yet: the original iPod would only be launched in October of that year. Europe’s first camera phone, the Nokia 7650, wouldn’t appear until the following year when Tom Tom would also launch its first sat-nav hardware.

With the US taking on Europe again in the Ryder Cup from tomorrow, I thought I’d try to track the article down. Originally published by Vodafone, it is no longer available on any of their websites as far as I can tell.

However it is possible to look back at what I tried to anticipate in 2001 thanks to the Internet Archive. On re-reading, I was surprised and gratified to see features I speculated about – voice control, navigation, e-ticketing and mobile money, smart watches, casting – hadn’t turned out to be so ridiculous.

PS: 9/11 happened between the original publication and the scheduled end-of-September date for the 2001 Ryder Cup: that year’s tournament was postponed for a year, and the bi-annual event has been held in even years ever since. A second cancellation due to the Covid-19 pandemic means that the 2020 Ryder Cup was postponed until 2021, to return the tournament to odd years.

PPS: As someone with a personal interest in 19th century sporting history, I’ve searched the Internet Archive quite a few times. I’m still trying to work how I feel about some of my own writing now residing there!
